The projects I have undertaken since becoming a Freelance Marketing Contractor and Project Manager provide a flavour of what I could do for you… Here are some highlights:

Isle of Man ABC –

Prior to embarking on client projects in 2019 (following maternity leave in 2017/18), I took the opportunity to self-publish a children’s picture book: ‘m’ is for Manx Cat! An Isle of Man ABC, by Gemma Hjerth and Kim Gee.

The book is due to be released in late March 2019 and received support from Isle of Man Arts Council and Year of Our Island.

It was illustrated and designed by Kim Gee, who expertly translated my vision and ideas into the unique digital art contained within.

‘m’ is for Manx Cat was deliberately designed to have the potential to develop into an Isle of Man ABC brand, with the opportunity to create further books, colouring books and merchandise in the future. 

This self-initiated project used a variety of my skills, including:

  • Market research, networking and feedback – analysis of children’s picture books and ABC books, feedback from local retailers, focus groups of potential buyers/teachers, self-published illustrators/authors, graphic designers, poets and freelance editors

  • Copywriting – the content of the book, design brief, grant submissions, press releases, sponsorship opportunities emails, website, social media content

  • Grant application submissions – to Culture Vannin, Year of Our Island and Isle of Man Arts Council, the latter two of which resulted in financial assistance being received

  • Printed book – in liaison with designer/printer

  • Project management and business development – liaising with retailers, illustrator/designer, printers, grant awarding bodies, sponsors, focus groups, schools, Manx speakers, editors etc, purchasing ISBN numbers, applying for Company Name, updating online book database, face to face book sales and distribution

  • Website development – including domain registration, copywriting, and building/launching a free site myself using the Wix content management system -

  • Social media channels – creation and management of @isleofmanabc on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram

Further potential tasks to come include:

  • Printed promotional materials – posters/ leaflets

  • Attendance at Isle of Man markets/fairs – event applications, preparation for attendance, direct sales and customer service

  • Branded merchandise – liaising with retailers/designer/suppliers to create Isle of Man ABC branded prints, notebooks, tea towels, card games, jigsaws etc

Ballakelly Farm –

  • Brand guidelines – creation of brand guidelines document and application of the farm’s branding

  • Printed marketing materials - copywriting and liaison with designers/printers for the creation of printed leaflets, posters, postcards and point of sale displays

  • Electronic marketing materials – design and copywriting of price lists, ingredients lists, order forms, invoice templates, recipe cards etc

  • Branded merchandise – sourcing and liaising with designers/suppliers to create branded fridge magnets, shopping bags (plastic, cotton and jute) and staff uniforms

  • General copywriting and project management – for press releases/articles, directory listings, official correspondence, and award submissions such as the 2017 ‘Great Taste Awards’ and Isle of Man 'Food and Farming Awards'

  • Isle of Man events – event applications, project management of attendance, hands on sales and customer service

  • Website development - project management, branding and copywriting

  • Facebook and Twitter - profile creation, copywriting and posts/tweets

Barista Express –

  • Marketing consultancy on potential marketing campaigns/communications, including copywriting and initial set up of a Christmas email campaign using MailChimp.

  • Copywriting, design and project management for advertisements in print publications and online directories

  • Creation of LinkedIn company profile

Gemma researched and provided information on an online mailout service, as well as creating a beautiful Christmas email campaign.
